Wim de Groot, portretten                     

 Wim de Groot (Rotterdam 1887–Lunteren 1956) wordt door zijn schildersvriend Jaap Dooijewaard in Blaricum attent gemaakt op Nunspeet. Dooijewaard woonde van 1905 tot 1915 in Nunspeet in het ‘atelier op de heuvel’ aan De Zoom (nu: De Veluwse Heuvel). De Groot gaat er in 1916 wonen en legt zich in Nunspeet toe op het schilderen van landschappen, figuren en portretten. In de exposite is goed te zien dat De Groot een meester is in het tekenen van portretten.

Als hij in 1920 naar Lunteren verhuist betrekt de familie Lussenburg de woning met atelier en later in 1936 Frans Huysmans. Zijn opleiding heeft hij gevolgd aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten te Rotterdam, waar hij les heeft gehad van onder andere Alexander van Maasdijk en Jan Striening. Ook volgde De Groot lessen aan de Academie des Beaux-Arts in Brussel en de Academie des Beaux-Arts in Parijs.

Met zestien schilders in vier generaties wordt de familie Koekkoek beschouwd als de grootste schildersfamilie ter wereld. Dit jaar worden op verschillende plekken kunstwerken van deze kunstschilders tentoongesteld. Op de bovenverdieping van het Noord-Veluws Museum is een wand met vier topstukken gewijd aan de familie Koekkoek.

Schilderijen van de beroemde bomenschilder Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862) kunt u bekijken in de expositie ‘Bomen over Bomen in Museum STAAL in Almen’. Bij kunsthandel Simonis en Buunk in Ede worden werken van vele leden van de Koekkoekfamilie tentoongesteld. Vanaf juli exposeert Museum Flehite in Amersfoort stadsgezichten en landschappen van Willem en Jan H.B. Koekkoek.

In Nunspeet ziet u het werk van familieleden die rond de Zuiderzee hebben geschilderd. Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851) is de eerste in het geslacht Koekkoek die van schilderen zijn vak maakte. Zijn oeuvre omvat stadsgezichten aan het water en schepen op zee of aan de oever. Hij schilderde met de grootste precisie en hij was beroemd om zijn waarheidsgetrouwe weergave van scheepstypen. Johannes Hermanus gaf zijn talent door aan vier van zijn acht kinderen.

Er zijn drie schilderijen van Hermanus Koekkoek sr. (1815-1882) te zien. Hij is de jongste zoon van Johannes Hermanus. Hij maakte een succesvolle carrière als schilder van zee-, strand- en riviergezichten. Met fijne penseelstreek en hetzelfde oog voor detail als zijn vader schilderde hij het dagelijkse leven van het vissersvolk op de schepen. Zijn zonen Hermanus jr., Willem, Jan H.B. en Barend Hendrik (H.B.) zetten de schilderstraditie voort. Zij werden allen opgeleid door hun vader.

Wat is het verband tussen deze drie kunstenaars, wier werk van 30 oktober 2021 t/m 23 januari 2022 in de Fré Drostzaal wordt geëxposeerd? Vorig jaar mocht het Noord-Veluws Museum een schenking van vijftien Veluwse tekeningen van Hendrik Willem de Jong (Rotterdam 1876 – Harderwijk 1950) in ontvangst nemen. Deze schenking wordt nu voor het eerst gepresenteerd. Hendrik de Jong had in Nunspeet een leerling en dat was Chris ten Bruggen Kate (Utrecht 1920 – Nunspeet 2003), die bekend zou worden met zijn magisch-realistische schilderijen. Daan de Jong (Utrecht 1982), schilder van landschappen en wolkenluchten, is een nazaat van de kunstzinnige familie De Jong en exposeert enkele Veluwse landschappen.

Hendrik Willem de Jong

Hendrik Willem de Jong was in 1927 na een leven als postambtenaar in Rotterdam en Zeeland in Nunspeet als kunstenaar begonnen. Hij was vooral een knap tekenaar. Hij tekende boompartijen en stillevens, maar vooral knappe portretten en ‘koppen’ met veelal streekdracht. Zijn liefde voor de kunst heeft hij van geen vreemde. Zijn oudere broer Jan, studeerde aan de Rotterdamse academie voor beeldende kunsten en wordt er later docent tekenen. Van hem kreeg Hendrik Willem al vroeg tekenlessen. Hendrik Willem was verder autodidact, maar hij volgde wel een schriftelijke cursus tekenen, gegeven door een gerenommeerde School of Drawings in Londen. Zijn docenten waren bijzonder lovend over hun leerling in Nederland.

Chris ten Bruggen Kate

In Nunspeet hield De Jong exposities aan huis en verkocht zo regelmatig schilderijen, maar dat was toch onvoldoende. Het echtpaar De Jong had dan ook regelmatig kostgangers in huis, onder wie Chris ten Brugge Kate. Chris mocht van zijn ouders niet naar de kunstacademie: “Zoek maar onderdak en ga maar in de leer bij een degelijk kunstenaar”. Van 1937 tot 1942 vond Chris onderdak in Nunspeet bij H.W. de Jong. Ten Bruggen Kate vond De Jong een goede leermeester, maar hij ging zijn eigen weg. Hij experimenteerde in alle richtingen en ontwikkelde tenslotte zijn bekende magisch-realistische stijl.

Daan de Jong

In de expositie zijn ook kunstwerken te zien van Daan de Jong, die na zijn afstuderen in 2004 aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht aan de weg timmert met bijzondere bijna fotografisch realistische landschappen met wolkenluchten. Zijn fascinatie ligt vooral bij het uitbeelden van de stemming van het moment en muziek is zijn grote inspiratiebron. Schilderijen komen al luisterend naar pianomuziek tot stand en veel kunstwerken dragen dan ook muzikale titels, zoals het Veluwse landschap ‘Poco agitato’.

Jaap Hiddink (Nunspeet 1910-2000) heeft zijn lange leven in kunstenaarsdorp Nunspeet gewerkt. Menig kunstliefhebber in deze regio herinnert zich misschien nog de laatste expositie van Jaap Hiddink in mei 2000 in het gemeentehuis van Nunspeet. Kort daarna is Jaap Hiddink in zijn woning aan de Spoorlaan in Nunspeet overleden. Uit een zeer omvangrijk oeuvre wordt twintig jaar na zijn overlijden een overzichtstentoonstelling van zijn werk gepresenteerd.

Jaap Hiddink is de enige geboren en getogen kunstschilder in kunstenaarsdorp Nunspeet. De aanwezigheid van veel kunstenaars in het kleine dorp moet voor Hiddink een stimulans geweest zijn om zich te wijden aan de schilderkunst. Op jonge leeftijd wordt Jaap aangetrokken door de Nunspeetse natuur en hij begon al jong met tekenen en schilderen.

Eigen handschrift

Hiddink kende de schilders Arthur Briët en Jan van Vuuren, hij was ‘thuis’ op het atelier van Jos Lussenburg en hij trok er regelmatig met Ben Viegers op uit. Hiddink is duidelijk geïnspireerd door deze kunstenaars, maar het is hem als autodidact gelukt om een geheel eigen handschrift te ontwikkelen. Op groot formaat doeken bracht hij de verf aan met een brede toets en speelse penseelstreek in een kleurrijk palet. Hiddinks schilderijen zijn vaak uitbundig, vol van levenslust en intense beleving van de natuur of van zijn onderwerp.

Politiek actief

Het typeert Hiddinks levenshouding dat hij ook politiek actief was in Nunspeet. Hij behoorde tot de oprichters van de partij Gemeentebelang, was vier jaar gemeenteraadslid en daarna van 1966 tot 1973 wethouder. In deze periode zette Hiddink zich ook in voor de oprichting van de Vrije Academie voor de Kunsten Nunspeet.

Oproep

Hiddink is als kunstenaar nog altijd heel geliefd, vooral bij de inwoners van Nunspeet en omgeving. Het Noord-Veluws Museum deed begin oktober een oproep aan de bezitters van een schilderij van Jaap Hiddink. Dankzij de medewerking van al deze particuliere eigenaren is een representatief deel van Hiddinks rijke oeuvre bijeengebracht.

Tot en met 29 november 2020 bieden het Noord-Veluws Museum en Museum Sjoel Elburg in een unieke samenwerking de tentoonstelling Vermoorde kunst met werk van ruim 25 joods Nederlandse kunstenaars die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden vermoord.

Tijdens de bezetting door nazi-Duitsland in de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn veel joodse kunstenaars om het leven gebracht. Hiermee werd hen op brute wijze de gelegenheid ontnomen om verder kunst te creëren. Zo werden niet alleen de kunstenaars vermoord, maar uiteindelijk ook de kunst. Dit indringende thema is de aanleiding voor een bijzondere samenwerking tussen Museum Sjoel Elburg en het Noord-Veluws Museum Nunspeet in het jaar dat 80 jaar WOII en 75 jaar vrijheid worden herdacht.

In Museum Sjoel Elburg is werk te zien van het bekende kunstenaarsechtpaar Else Berg (1877-1942) en Mommie Schwarz (1876-1942). Twee verdienstelijke schilders die gevormd werden in de traditie van het 19de-eeuwse kunstonderricht, maar zich aangetrokken voelden tot de modernistische explosies in de kunst van begin 20ste eeuw en daarna steeds opnieuw probeerden een eigen stijl te vinden. Tijdens de bezetting weigerden zij de jodenster te dragen. Eind 1942 werden zij opgepakt en in Auschwitz omgebracht.

Het Noord-Veluws Museum presenteert ruim 100 schilderijen, aquarellen, grafiek en tekeningen uit belangrijke particuliere verzamelingen en uit verschillende museale collecties. De werken zijn van kunstenaars als Baruch Laguna (1864-1943), Meijer Bleekrode (1896-1943), Moos Cohen (1901-1942), Fré Cohen (1903-1943), Max van Dam (1910-1943), Salomon Garf (1879-1943), Abraham Fresco (1903-1942), Dinah Kohnstamm (1869-1942 ), Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868-1944), Marinus van Raalte (1873-1944), Lion Schulman (1851-1943) en Jetty de Vries (1886-1942).

Doorwerken of niet, dat was de vraag waar kunstenaars, en vooral joodse kunstenaars, voor stonden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De één heeft ondergedoken min of meer doorgewerkt, de ander deed dat openlijk en weigerde onder te duiken of de jodenster te dragen. Sommigen namen deel aan illegale verzetsactiviteiten. Wat deze kunstenaars overkwam en wat zij beleefden is meestal niet terug te zien in hun werk. In de tentoonstelling is daardoor een grote diversiteit aan kunstwerken te zien, gemaakt door verschillende generaties kunstenaars die werkten in verschillende stijlen, van realisme en impressionisme tot expressionistisch modernisme. Wat hen bindt, is dat ze joods geboren waren en om die reden werden omgebracht.

Bij deze tentoonstelling verschijnt een rijk geïllustreerde gebonden uitgave met artikelen van oud-conservator van het Joods Historisch Museum, rabbijn Edward van Voolen en Linda Horn, auteur van de dubbelmonografie over Else Berg en Mommie Schwarz, onder de titel ‘Vermoorde kunst – werk van vermoorde joodse kun­stenaars’. De publicatie is uitgegeven bij Van Spijk Art Books en voor € 17,50 te koop in de museumwinkel van beide musea.
