Jaap Hiddink (Nunspeet 1910-2000) heeft zijn lange leven in kunstenaarsdorp Nunspeet gewerkt. Menig kunstliefhebber in deze regio herinnert zich misschien nog de laatste expositie van Jaap Hiddink in mei 2000 in het gemeentehuis van Nunspeet. Kort daarna is Jaap Hiddink in zijn woning aan de Spoorlaan in Nunspeet overleden. Uit een zeer omvangrijk oeuvre wordt twintig jaar na zijn overlijden een overzichtstentoonstelling van zijn werk gepresenteerd.

Jaap Hiddink is de enige geboren en getogen kunstschilder in kunstenaarsdorp Nunspeet. De aanwezigheid van veel kunstenaars in het kleine dorp moet voor Hiddink een stimulans geweest zijn om zich te wijden aan de schilderkunst. Op jonge leeftijd wordt Jaap aangetrokken door de Nunspeetse natuur en hij begon al jong met tekenen en schilderen.

Eigen handschrift

Hiddink kende de schilders Arthur Briët en Jan van Vuuren, hij was ‘thuis’ op het atelier van Jos Lussenburg en hij trok er regelmatig met Ben Viegers op uit. Hiddink is duidelijk geïnspireerd door deze kunstenaars, maar het is hem als autodidact gelukt om een geheel eigen handschrift te ontwikkelen. Op groot formaat doeken bracht hij de verf aan met een brede toets en speelse penseelstreek in een kleurrijk palet. Hiddinks schilderijen zijn vaak uitbundig, vol van levenslust en intense beleving van de natuur of van zijn onderwerp.

Politiek actief

Het typeert Hiddinks levenshouding dat hij ook politiek actief was in Nunspeet. Hij behoorde tot de oprichters van de partij Gemeentebelang, was vier jaar gemeenteraadslid en daarna van 1966 tot 1973 wethouder. In deze periode zette Hiddink zich ook in voor de oprichting van de Vrije Academie voor de Kunsten Nunspeet.

Oproep

Hiddink is als kunstenaar nog altijd heel geliefd, vooral bij de inwoners van Nunspeet en omgeving. Het Noord-Veluws Museum deed begin oktober een oproep aan de bezitters van een schilderij van Jaap Hiddink. Dankzij de medewerking van al deze particuliere eigenaren is een representatief deel van Hiddinks rijke oeuvre bijeengebracht.

Tot en met 29 november 2020 bieden het Noord-Veluws Museum en Museum Sjoel Elburg in een unieke samenwerking de tentoonstelling Vermoorde kunst met werk van ruim 25 joods Nederlandse kunstenaars die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden vermoord.

Tijdens de bezetting door nazi-Duitsland in de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn veel joodse kunstenaars om het leven gebracht. Hiermee werd hen op brute wijze de gelegenheid ontnomen om verder kunst te creëren. Zo werden niet alleen de kunstenaars vermoord, maar uiteindelijk ook de kunst. Dit indringende thema is de aanleiding voor een bijzondere samenwerking tussen Museum Sjoel Elburg en het Noord-Veluws Museum Nunspeet in het jaar dat 80 jaar WOII en 75 jaar vrijheid worden herdacht.

In Museum Sjoel Elburg is werk te zien van het bekende kunstenaarsechtpaar Else Berg (1877-1942) en Mommie Schwarz (1876-1942). Twee verdienstelijke schilders die gevormd werden in de traditie van het 19de-eeuwse kunstonderricht, maar zich aangetrokken voelden tot de modernistische explosies in de kunst van begin 20ste eeuw en daarna steeds opnieuw probeerden een eigen stijl te vinden. Tijdens de bezetting weigerden zij de jodenster te dragen. Eind 1942 werden zij opgepakt en in Auschwitz omgebracht.

Het Noord-Veluws Museum presenteert ruim 100 schilderijen, aquarellen, grafiek en tekeningen uit belangrijke particuliere verzamelingen en uit verschillende museale collecties. De werken zijn van kunstenaars als Baruch Laguna (1864-1943), Meijer Bleekrode (1896-1943), Moos Cohen (1901-1942), Fré Cohen (1903-1943), Max van Dam (1910-1943), Salomon Garf (1879-1943), Abraham Fresco (1903-1942), Dinah Kohnstamm (1869-1942 ), Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868-1944), Marinus van Raalte (1873-1944), Lion Schulman (1851-1943) en Jetty de Vries (1886-1942).

Doorwerken of niet, dat was de vraag waar kunstenaars, en vooral joodse kunstenaars, voor stonden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De één heeft ondergedoken min of meer doorgewerkt, de ander deed dat openlijk en weigerde onder te duiken of de jodenster te dragen. Sommigen namen deel aan illegale verzetsactiviteiten. Wat deze kunstenaars overkwam en wat zij beleefden is meestal niet terug te zien in hun werk. In de tentoonstelling is daardoor een grote diversiteit aan kunstwerken te zien, gemaakt door verschillende generaties kunstenaars die werkten in verschillende stijlen, van realisme en impressionisme tot expressionistisch modernisme. Wat hen bindt, is dat ze joods geboren waren en om die reden werden omgebracht.

Bij deze tentoonstelling verschijnt een rijk geïllustreerde gebonden uitgave met artikelen van oud-conservator van het Joods Historisch Museum, rabbijn Edward van Voolen en Linda Horn, auteur van de dubbelmonografie over Else Berg en Mommie Schwarz, onder de titel ‘Vermoorde kunst – werk van vermoorde joodse kun­stenaars’. De publicatie is uitgegeven bij Van Spijk Art Books en voor € 17,50 te koop in de museumwinkel van beide musea.

Djurre Pieter Duursma (Amsterdam 1888-1965 Den Haag) vormt zichzelf als schilder na tekenlessen op de academie in Antwerpen. Zijn eerste schilderijen zijn impressionistisch van karakter, maar vanaf 1910 worden zijn werken uit Noord-Afrika fauvistisch. Van 1911 tot 1913 schildert Duursma met zijn vriend Harrie Kuyten ‘s zomers in Noorwegen en Zweden, waar hij zich laat beïnvloeden door de expressionist Edvard Munch. In 1916 sluit hij zich in Amsterdam aan bij de beweging De Anderen van Theo Van Doesburg en Erich Wichman. Zijn werk wordt abstracter, schilderijen krijgen geen titels, maar nummers.

Duursma’s verblijf in Vierhouten

In de zomer van 1916 opent Duursma een expositie van schilderijen en etsen in boerderij De Heikijk aan de Elspeterbosweg in Vierhouten. Adriaan Lubbers, een technisch tekenaar die zich graag wil ontwikkelen als beeldend kunstenaar, heeft Duursma en Leo Gestel te logeren gevraagd omdat hij weet dat ze vernieuwend bezig zijn. Violist Dirk Gootjes, lid van het Concertgebouworkest, is ook uitgenodigd vanwege zijn moderne stijl van musiceren.

Duursma maakt in die zomer in ieder geval twee schilderijen van een huisje op de heide, waarschijnlijk ook een werk met de titel ‘vliegende vogel’ en een werk met de naam ‘de kus’. Van Leo Gestel is niet bekend of hij in deze omgeving heeft geschilderd. Lubbers maakt er schetsen die hij later uitwerkt tot schilderijen en Gootjes verzorgt een concert in Nunspeet.

Duursma naar Speuld

In 1917 stuurt Duursma abstract werk in voor een tentoonstelling van De Onafhankelijken in Amsterdam. Op het begeleidende formulier staat als adres vermeld ‘Speuld bij Ermelo’. Daar heeft Duursma met twee andere schilders een schaapskooi ingericht als atelier. Hij richt de schaapskooi ook in als ‘herstellingsoord’ voor een verpleegster, getraumatiseerd door haar werk in Engelse hospitalen tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

Na 1920 specialiseert Duursma zich in het glas-schilderen en na 1930 bovendien in het ontwerpen en maken van meubels. Helaas is veel werk van Duursma verloren gegaan. Toch is in deze bescheiden presentatie te zien dat Duursma zich in korte tijd wist ontwikkelen tot een vernieuwend en veelzijdig kunstenaar. De expositie wordt aangevuld met werk van Leo Gestel, Adriaan Lubbers, Harrie Kuyten en Louis Saalborn.

Blanche Douglas Hamilton (1852-1927) woonde en werkte zo’n dertig jaar in Elspeet, waar ze bekend werd als ‘de Engelse juffer’. Teylers Museum in Haarlem had zich ontfermd over haar artistieke nalatenschap. Het grootste deel daarvan schonk het eind 2017 aan het Noord-Veluws Museum. De schenking was een goede aanleiding om een boek over deze kunstenares te maken.

Uit een veelheid van bronnen diepte auteur Kees Verbeek tal van interessante en kleurrijke details op over Hamiltons leven. Daarbij doken steeds twee vriendinnen op, ook actief in deze hoek van de Veluwe: schilder en naaldkunstenaar freule Ima van Eysinga (1872-1958) en schilder Chrisje van der Willigen (1850-1931). Ook over deze twee vrouwen heeft Verbeek opmerkelijke gegevens gevonden. Alle drie schilderden niet alleen op de Veluwe, maar reisden veel en deden daar in hun werk verslag van.

Ter gelegenheid van de presentatie van het boek is deze expositie over de drie kunstenaressen in de RABO zaal te zien.

De op Java geboren Arthur Briët volgt vanaf 1884 zijn opleiding aan de Koninklijk Academie in Antwerpen waar hij een studiegenoot was van Vincent van Gogh. Briët sluit zijn kunstopleiding in 1888 af met de Prix d’ Excellence. Na een verblijf in Parijs, Italië en België vestigt hij zich in 1892 weer in Nederland. Hij ontdekt Nunspeet op een trektocht vanuit Laren. Vanaf 1893 is hij inwoner van Nunspeet, het kunstenaarsdorp dat zeer in trek was omdat de schilderachtige onderwerpen zich hier in ruime mate aandienden. Hij verblijft afwisselend op het Noord-Brabantse platteland, in Laren en in Nunspeet, waar hij zich ontwikkelt tot een gerenommeerd schilder van verstilde boereninterieurs.

De tentoonstelling geeft een overzicht van het werk van deze kunstenaar, die behalve intieme interieurstukken en sfeervolle landschappen, magistrale portretten schilderde. Briët dankt zijn bijnaam ‘Rembrandt van de Veluwe’ aan het feit dat hij net als zijn wereldberoemde voorganger met een sterk licht-donker contrast in zijn schilderijen werkt. Die speciale techniek is een belangrijk kenmerk van de stijl van Rembrandt, ‘clair-obscur’ genoemd, die weer geïnspireerd was door de bekende Italiaanse schilder Caravaggio. Ook in de hantering van zijn penselen is te zien dat hij veel had geleerd van Rembrandt. Briët combineert net zoals de grote meester zowel een naturalistische en impressionistische penseelstreek.

Briët woont tot zijn overlijden in 1939 in Nunspeet aan de rand van de Zoom. Daar staan de kleine armoedige huisjes van de dagloners, die het onderwerp vormen van zijn schilderijen. Om zelf de regie te houden over de opstelling voor een schilderij richt Briët een ‘schildershut’ op in zijn tuin, een replica van een zo’n boerenvertrek. Later koopt hij zo’n huisje en verplaatst het naar zijn tuin. Zo heeft hij dit huisje altijd als inspiratiebron voor de boerenbinnenhuizen, waarmee hij bekend geworden is. Briët exposeert zijn werk in binnen- en buitenland en verkoopt schilderijen in zowel Sint Petersburg als Parijs. In Nederland is werk van Briët te vinden in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, het Centraal Museum te Utrecht, het Drents Museum te Assen, het Singer Laren, het Noord-Veluws Museum en diverse andere musea.

In de tentoonstelling is een prachtige selectie kunstwerken van Arthur Briët te zien uit een tiental museumcollecties en ruim dertig privécollecties.
